BUILDING COMMUNITY: A NATIONAL INITIATIVE ON FAMILY AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATIONMAPPS (Math and Parent Partnerships in the Southwest) was an NSF funded project that, since 1999, developed and piloted a model for parent partnerships in mathematics in the context of a university/school district partnership. In the final stages of our project, we organized a national conference where participants shared ideas and experienced and thought about future directions for parent partnerships in mathematics. We brought together experts from family-school organizations, leaders in the field of mathematics education, educational researchers interested in parent involvement as well as scholars who have developed materials and/or activities for parents in mathematics. Panel sessions will feature representatives from parent organizations, directors of mathematics projects, and representatives from national parent involvement organizations. Prominent researchers will host working groups in which they will discuss the implications of their work while participants can raise questions for further research.
